The Jefferson County Platoon
On June 28th 1968, during the height of the Vietnam War, a group of 45 young men enlisted in the U.S Army, as the Jefferson County Platoon. This has never been done in Colorado before, or since. A 50th year reunion is being planned for 2018 to bring that group of men back together. Most of these veterans have not seen each other since Basic Training and the Vietnam experience 50 years ago. Joe Sleevi and Don Emmot, the two basic training “acting platoon sergeants”, have been searching for the men who joined the Platoon that day. So far, with additional help from another member, Ron Rickard, they have found nearly all of them. To date, only 5 are known to have died. The cause of death is unknown in many cases; however, none are known to have been killed in action.
The group is in need of individual, corporate, and business sponsorship since there is no outside agency assisting the group in raising funds for this 'once in 50 years' commemorative endeavor. Most of these Veterans have worked in the Jefferson County area over the years, completely unseen, unknown, unnoticed, and for the most part, just grateful to have survived the War, when so many of our country’s Soldiers did not. This is an opportunity for you and your organization to make a huge difference in the first and only 'Welcome Home' these men receive.
We need to provide a venue and dinner for the surviving Veterans, their spouses and family members, local government officials and veterans from other organizations. A large portion of the money raised will go toward a permanent commemorative memorial in Jefferson County, and any remainder to a Vietnam Veterans of America unit in Lakewood, CO.
We are registered with the IRS as a fund raising reunion group. Donations via credit card can be made on the reunion web site – www.jeffcoplatoon.myevent.com
